2027 marks the 250th anniversary of Heinrich von Kleist's birth. Numerous institutions in the city of Frankfurt (Oder), the poet's birthplace and place of study, are taking this as an opportunity to present a diverse, interdisciplinary and cooperative festival programme that explores the life, works and reception of Heinrich von Kleist. Based on Kleist's themes and the historical peculiarity of the twin city of Frankfurt (Oder) – Słubice (Poland), the anniversary programme is dedicated to the current constitution of the region on and beyond the eastern border, its reality and possible future.
The prologue: October 2026
The festival: April - October 2027
The Brandenburg State Foundation Kleist Museum, in close cooperation with the city of Frankfurt (Oder), will act as an interface to the planning of institutional actors, both regional and national, as well as a production site and venue for a multi-layered, participatory and low-threshold programme. Under the motto "Kreuzungen - Intersections. 250 - Kleist", the programme aims to facilitate encounters, start and continue conversations, but also retrace intersecting decisions and reconsider paths. What happens when literature meets art? What research has been done in connection with Kleist? What contemporary and historical-critical perspectives are there on Kleist's works? How is Kleist's work localised today? Can we develop and test ideas of open coexistence in our time, which is characterised by multiple crises, but also by new beginnings and many productive efforts for improvement? The anniversary year should conceptually address these questions and topics and, of course, also celebrate the author Kleist.
In October 2026, the Kleist Museum would like to organise a thematic prologue together with international partners, artists and other participants, which will lead up to the Kleist anniversary in terms of content. An open workshop will be set up specifically for this purpose as a venue and meeting place.
The festival will follow in 2027 from April to November with numerous events, readings, performances and installations as well as the opening of the new permanent exhibition and an extensive discourse and mediation programme.
